With more than 50 woodworking titles under his belt, Patrick Spielman is a true expert. Here he shares some helpful hints. - When cutting more than one of the same design, attach the layers of wood with small nails to hold them together, and make the cuts as though they were one piece of wood. Glue the pattern on the top piece, drill a hole to insert the saw blade, make the cut, unhook and unthread the blade, and push it up through another hole. Continue until the entire inside pattern is cut. This method can save you a lot of time (figure A).
- To give your project the look of a silhouette, spray or paint the wood black, and let it dry before you apply the pattern for cutting (figure B).
