Materials: 16" length of 1" x 6" pine Ruler 150-grit sandpaper Pencil 3 jars with lids Awl 2 larger, Mason-type jars with lids Medium paintbrush L wall brackets Phillips screwdriver 1 pint of interior paint Drill (optional) (6) 1/2" screws (8 to 12) 3/4" screws (4 to 6) plastic expanders (optional) - If not already cut to size, cut a length of 1" x 6" pine to 16" for shelf.
- Use 150-grit sandpaper to smooth shelf.
- On underside of shelf, use ruler to mark 2" in from each end of shelf and 3/4" in from the front lip of shelf.
- Arrange three smaller jar lids an equal distance from one another -- butting up against but not crossing the established 2" and 3/4" margins (figure A).
- Using the awl, punch two off-center holes through each lid and into the pine underneath.
Work Smart: You need two holes because with a single hole, the jar lid would spin. The two will secure the lid perfectly. - Stand the shelf perpendicular with the back lip of the shelf against the worktable and the lid side facing you. Place an L bracket in the 2" margin -- flush against the shelf and the worktable. Use the pencil to mark the position of the L-bracket screw-holes on the shelf.
- Use the awl to indent the L-bracket screw-hole positions in the pine.
- Now that all the hardware marks are in place, paint the shelf and allow to dry.
- Apply a second coat of paint and allow to dry.
Painting Tip: An easy way to paint both sides of the board without causing a mess is to attach a piece of cardboard to the board (figure B) with screws. Paint both sides of the board, then remove the screws after the paint has dried. Paint the thin side that was attached to the wood or cardboard. - Line up holes in lids with holes in pine and affix lids with 1/2" screws.
- Line up holes in L brackets with holes in pine and affix brackets with 3/4" screws.
- Position shelf on wall and use pencil to mark holes in L brackets on the wall.
- Optional: Use a drill to create holes in wall. Use hammer to gently tap in plastic expanders.
- Position shelf on wall and screw 3/4" screws into plastic expanders.
- Use awl to make indentations on wall at pencil marks.
- Position shelf on wall and screw 3/4" screws into L-bracket holes.
- Fill jars and screw into lids.
- Fill larger jars and place on top of shelf.
Tip: You can have the 1" x 6" pine board cut to the desired length at the place of purchase. Products: Available at home-improvement, hardware and discount stores nationwide.
