    Materials:

Wooden boxes (something you already have or inexpensively purchased at a craft store)
Handles to attach for drawer pulls
    Dowels (3/8" in diameter)
    Labels for spices
    Standard spice jars
    Drill and a 3/8" bit
Small saw to cut dowels (or measure first and have them cut at the hardware store)
Miter box (only if you are cutting the dowels)
    Wood glue
    Measuring tape
    Black marker
    Spackling paste
    Putty knife
    Paint (optional)
    3" paintbrush (optional)

    1. (Optional step) Paint box to go with your kitchen decor. Let dry.

    2. Attach handles for drawer pulls. When the box is finished, you can sit it on any shelf but pull it out like a drawer.

    3. Measure the size of the dowels you will need to cut. The dowels will go diagonally on the drawer, one near the bottom and one higher and a little more slanted. Note: If you didn't have the hardware store cut the dowels, the task is easier if you use a miter box (figure A).

    4. Measure and mark the spots to be drilled.

    5. Drill holes and slide the dowels through (figure B).

Work Smart: When using a drill, it's important to keep your finger pressed on the power button or nozzle going in and out to create a smooth hole.

    6. Use wood glue to secure the dowel.

    7. Cover the dowel holes with spackle and smooth with a putty knife (figure C ).

    8. Optional: Paint to disguise the spackle.

    9. Label and place spices in drawer.

    Tips:

    • This project is great for people who have small kitchens or pantries with no space for traditional spice racks.

    • These drawers prop spices at an angle so it's easy to find and use them.

Products: Available at craft, art-supply and discount stores nationwide.
