Along with the home remedies, there are lots of products that help you keep non-insect pests at bay, says show host Kim Haworth. Here are just a few of the effective products on the market: - A good way to protect the lettuce crop from rabbits is with garlic clips. You should puncture the hole with a sharp object, and then attach the garlic clip to the side of a lettuce leaf. It smells intensely of garlic, which will drive rabbits away. Use one clip per plant, or per every other plant. A less expensive way to protect lettuce is with the real thing. Plant garlic around the lettuce plot, planting whole bulbs or individual cloves, pointed end up.
- A product that dogs and cats really hate combines oils of lemon grass, citronella, orange, and mustard. You clip the little oil sacs onto a shrub clips (figure A )and cats and dogs will avoid it. The manufacturer says not to use the product on vegetable crops, though.
- If you don't want moles, use a miniature -- but still heavy -- windmill-type product that creates a vibration below the earth (figure B). Moles will find new places to dig that don't feel like an earthquake is due any minute. But keep in mind that moles in the garden tend to cultivate the soil more than eat anything or damage plants, so you may want to just leave them be.
