As outlined in earlier segments, the layout of your workshop should incorporate wood storage that's in close proximity to the major stationary tools such as table saw, wood jointer, band saw, etc.
There are essentially three categories of wood that are typically stored in a workshop: - Sheet stock such as plywood
- Rough or full-size lumber
- Shorts and scraps.
When storing plywood, you can save space by storing it upright, standing on its short edge.
- To prevent warping, store lumber off the floor to keep moisture away from the wood. A versatile wall-mounted storage rack can easily be fashioned out of 2x4 lumber. First, upright braces are fastened to the wall studs (figure A).
- Horizontal brackets are then attached to the upright braces and supported by 45-degree miter-cut gussets (figure B).
If you don't have space for a wall-mounted rack, consider a rolling wood rack (figure C). This storage unit is also easy to build. It's essentially a box made from 3/4" plywood, mounted on rollers and with dividers installed.
The dividers fit into dado grooves that have been cut in the walls of the container. The dividers are left loose in the dados so that they can be lifted out if desired (figure D).
Cut the channels in the side pieces on the table saw using a double-thickness dado blade (figure E). Set at the proper height, the two blades cut a wide groove in the plywood without cutting all the way through.
The dado cut provides a 3/4" channel for the plywood dividers to slide into (figure F).
Wood-Storage Tip: Smaller pieces of lumber -- and especially fragile pieces of wood trim -- can be stored in a trash can that has been outfitted with pieces of PVC pipe and caster wheels on the bottom (figure G).
Cut pieces of pipe to a length that matches the depth of the can. The pipe sections form dividers for organizing the pieces by size and type (figure H).
