  • Quick Tip: Protective Window Film
  • From "Ask DIY"
    episode ADI-311
    advertisement

If you'd like your rooms to be illuminated by sunlight, but are worried the UV rays will fade your furniture and carpets, Brad Staggs has the perfect solution: tinted window film.

This product, sold in most home centers, is easy to apply and is available many tints and protective varieties. If you're unsure which type you need, ask an expert at your local home improvement center when you make your selection.

Before getting started, be sure you have these additional items on hand:

    Sharp scissors or utility knife
    Tape measure
    Fine-line permanent marker
    Clear tape
    Spray bottle filled with water
    A helper

Then, just follow these easy guidelines:

    • Before cutting, carefully measure your window, then measure and mark your film accordingly using the tape measure and permanent marker. When you mark and cut the film, leave its protective covering in place -- this allows you to mark your guidelines on the cover instead of on the film itself.

Note: Whether you choose to cut your film with scissors or a utility knife, sharp blades are essential to prevent any unsightly jagged edges.

Safety alert: As always, exercise caution when working with sharp tools, and be sure to keep them well out of children's reach at all times.

    • Once the film is cut to the necessary size, stick small pieces of tape to the corners (one piece on the front and back of each corner, making sure the pieces don't stick together). Have your helper hold the pieces of tape on one side while you hold the pieces on the reverse side and simply pull the covering and film apart. (Trying to keep the sheet smooth while removing the cover yourself can be quite frustrating!)

    • Remove the tape and lay the film on a clean, lint-free surface near the window.

    • After you've made sure your window is completely clean and free of any debris, use the spray bottle to wet the entire surface before applying the film. Your window must stay wet during the process to ensure the film adheres smoothly.

    • Finally, hold the film carefully at the two top corners, press the corners in place on the window and begin smoothing the film in place, working downward until you've reached the bottom.
