Prep Work, Remove Window Sill and Cut Out Interior Side Holes = 3 hours
Remove Old Window and Cut Out Side Windows = 4 hours
Build New Frames and Set Glass Blocks = 5 hours
Exterior and Interior Trim = 4 hours
Total time spent on project = 16 hours over 2-1/2 days

On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the hardest, this project is a level 3.

We spent approximately $600 for supplies; a contractor would charge around $1,500.

    Materials:

    Scaffolding (rented)
    Utility knife
    Flat pry bar
    Hammer
    Level
    Key hole saw
    Speed square
    Cats paw
    2 x 4's
    2-1/2" wood screws
    1 x 6 pine
    2-1/2" finish nails
    Glass blocks
    Framing for glass blocks
    Mortar for glass blocks
    Spacers
    White or clear silicone sealant
    Panel anchors
    Trowel
    Mortar pan
    Drill, driver and bits
    Tin snips
    Measuring tape
    2-1/4" case molding
    Caulk and caulking gun
    Paint and brushes

    1. You need to remove some siding in order to see the edges of the window. Cut the vinyl 2-1/2 inches from the window frame (figure A).

    2. Install brick molding on the edges of the window.

    3. Nail "J Channel" along the side of the brick molding (figure B).

    4. Nail and set the vinyl starting from the bottom and working up (figure C).

Expert Tip: Whenever you are installing vinyl siding, make sure you leave the nail heads up just slightly so the siding has a little play in it. Leaving it a little loose will keep it from buckling as it expands and contracts from the heat and cold.

    5. Use a siding removal tool to get under the edge of the siding and slide it back in place (figure D).

    6. Make cuts along the narrow edges with a pair of snips. Make sure the siding is level before nailing it.

    7. Caulk and fill the nail holes and paint the trim.

    8. On the inside wall, paint the inside edge of the pine trim.

    9. Trim out the windows with 2-1/4" inch case molding (figure E). Install the molding with 2-1/2" inch finish nails, leaving a 16th of an inch reveal.

    10. Once the molding is up, fill in the nail holes, caulk along the edges and corners and give it a final coat of paint.
