With plants and grasses now creating a beautiful border around the water garden (figure A), host Mayita Dinos is now ready to begin adding submersible aqautic plant varieties to the pond to add interest to its surface.

Note: When adding water plants to a pond, be sure the plants have been planted in containers with a soil designed for water gardens. Also, be sure to place each aquatic variety at the proper depth; each type will have different needs. If in doubt, check with the staff at your local garden center or nursery.

    • Before adding the plants, Dinos adds the appropriate amount of chlorine remover to the water to ensure that it's suitable to sustain plant life. Then she's ready to add the first group of plants.

    • To add soft, dark texture near the inside edge of the pond, Dinos selects Dwarf Horsetail, Equisetum scirpoides (figure B). Four of these little beauties are placed in a small arc for a lovely look.

    • Next Dinos adds Carolina Jessamine, Gelsemium sempervirens (figure C ),  to the water for height, carefully submersing the container and making sure it's level before moving on to the next planting.

    • With the jessamine in place, Dinos is ready to add a bit more height with Black Flowering Fountain Grass, Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Moudry' (figure D), which is followed by several lovely water lilies, Anacharis, shown in figure E.

    • Finally, Dinos anchors several stems of Dwarf Bamboo, Sasa pygmaea (figure F), with small stones and rubber bands. The weight of the stones will keep the plants from separating and floating to the surface. Scattered over various areas of the pond, these accent plants provide a natural, finishing touch to the surface of this tranquil water garden.
