Rolled insulation is generally fairly easy to install. Always wear gloves and long sleeves when handling insulation. First, measure between the top and bottom plates, and cut a strip of insulation to length. To cut the insulation, lay it face down and place a straightedge, such as a scrap board, along the line where you plan to cut. Press down on the board, and cut along the edge with a sharp utility knife (figure A). Position the insulation in the wall cavity so the paper flaps on the back of the insulation are lined up along the wall studs. Secure the insulation to the studs with 1/2" or 3/8" staples (figure B). Note: The kraft paper on the back of the insulation forms a vapor barrier to protect your wall from moisture damage.
