The most common dry-wall maladies include cracks, holes, dents and popped nails. Fortunately, you can solve these problems easily with the right repair tools. To repair a dent in dry wall, use a small putty knife to spread a layer of spackling compound over the dent (figure A). Smooth the compound until it's even with the wall. Allow about 15 minutes for it to dry. Use a damp cloth or sponge to smooth the compound and rid the wall of any debris. If a nail has popped through the dry wall, use a utility knife to shave off the paper surrounding the head of the nail (figure B). Drive the nail back in with a dry-wall hammer (figure C). You'll make a dent in the wall when hammering, which will recess the nail. Drive a dry-wall screw about 2" below the nail ( figure D) to act as a backup in case it doesn't hold. Spread spackling compound over the dent, the nail and the screw (figure E). Smooth the compound and allow 15 minutes for it to dry. Use dry-wall sandpaper to finish smoothing the surface (figure F). To fix a larger hole in dry wall, lay two or three strips of dry-wall tape over the hole (figure G). Use a taping knife to spread dry-wall mud over the hole and the tape (figure H). Allow the mud to dry before sanding the surface.
