There are two easy techniques for fixing small holes in your dry wall. Newspaper method Materials:
Newspaper Fast-drying patching compound Wall joint compound Putty knife Sandpaper - Stuff crumpled newspaper behind the hole and patch it with a fast-drying patching compound (figure A). The patch should be just below the surface of the wall. The compound will dry to a hard surface in about 30 minutes.
- Use a putty knife to apply joint compound over the patch (figure B).
- Allow the joint compound to dry, and then sand it smooth. Apply additional joint compound as necessary.
- Sand, prime and paint the patched area.
Fiberglass mesh method Materials:
Fiberglass mesh tape Utility knife Wall joint compound Putty knife Sandpaper - Cut a piece of fiberglass mesh tape, and place it over the hole (figure C ). Trim the mesh as necessary with a utility knife.
- Use a putty knife to apply joint compound over the mesh.
- Sand the patch, and then apply a second coat of joint compound. Apply additional coats as necessary.
- Sand, prime and paint the patched area.
Tip: To apply a patch over nail holes, dimple the area by striking it with a hammer. This will provide a better surface for holding the drywall compound.
