That old wood-burning tool in your workshop can be put to good use. Wood-burning pens can be used on wood or leather to add creative designs. Materials: Wood-burning pen and tip attachments Wood for address plate Optional: metal ruler Optional: wood stain or paint Optional: cotton swabs - Insert a tip attachment on the end of the wood-burning pen (figure A). The tip you choose depends on the size of the lines you want to draw. Thicker tips are better for shading, whereas thin tips are good for drawing lines. Make sure the pen is unplugged and cool before you insert the tip.
- Plug in the pen, and allow time for it to heat up, following the manufacturer's instructions.
- Place the tool on the work piece, and hold it down for a few seconds to give the wood time to burn (figure B).
- To create a design, use the wood-burning pen as you would an ink pen but moving slowly.
- To make straight lines, use a metal ruler as a straightedge (figure C); a plastic ruler would melt.
- To add color, dip a cotton swab in paint or wood stain. Brush the swab over the burns in the work piece (figure D).
