The unorganized craftsman wastes a lot of time trying to find the right-sized screw or bolt--especially when all the screws and bolts are kept in a single container. A sorting pan can organize those screws and bolts to help you find what you need quickly and return the rest to the container.

    Materials:

    Router
    Two 12" x 3 1/2" x 1" boards
    Two 16" x 3 1/2" x 1" boards
    16" x 12" sheet of 3/8 plywood
    16 2" nails
    Hammer or nail gun
    Two 6" x 3 1/2" x 1" boards
Miter saw or miter box and saw
    Plastic water bottle
    Scissors
    Glue
    Drill
    Screws

    1. Use a router to cut a 2 1/2" U-shaped opening in the center of one of the 12" boards (figure A).

    2. The four boards will form the sides of the box. The sheet of plywood will form the bottom of the box. Nail the boards and plywood together to create the box (figure B).

    3. Using a miter saw or a miter box and saw, cut both ends of the two 6" boards at a 45-degree angle. Using a hammer or nail gun, secure these two boards at the corners surrounding the U-shaped opening (figure C). They will act as a funnel for screws, nails and bolts.

    4. Cut about 4" from the bottom of a water bottle. Cut 1" slots at the open end of the piece of the bottle you just cut (figure D). Cut a large circle from the other end.

    5. Glue the slots of the water bottle to the outside of the U-shaped opening (figure E). For a secure fit, drill small screws into the slots to hold them in place (figure F).

    6. To use the sorting pan, dump your jar of screws, nails and bolts into the box. After finding what you need, pour the rest through the funnel back into the container (figure G).
