A scroll saw generally doesn't generate enough dust to warrant an exhaust duct. Even so, dust can harm the motor bearings, not to mention the user's eyes and nose. A homemade vacuum accessory can solve that problem. Here's how to create your own scroll-saw "maid." Materials:
Drill press 3/8" drill bit Plastic aspirin bottle or other small plastic bottle Two pieces of 3/8" flexible tubing Silicone caulk Shop vacuum Duct tape Electrical cable clamps - Set the drill on a low speed. Drill two 3/8" holes in the bottom of the aspirin bottle (figure A). After drilling, clean out the plastic shavings.
- Fit one end of a piece of tubing into one hole (figure B). Fit the end of the other piece of tubing into the second hole.
- To make sure the tubing is air-tight inside the bottle, apply silicone caulk around the margins of the holes in the aspirin bottle (figure C).
- Use duct tape to secure the end of the vacuum hose to the top of the aspirin bottle (figure D).
- Extend the two tubes from the bottle to the cutting blade area (figure E). Secure the tubes with electrical-cable clamps.
