The circular saw can be used to make straight cuts through almost any kind of material. Although the same cuts can also be made with a table saw or a radial-arm saw, the circular saw has the advantage of portability. Several types are available, from household models to professional, heavy-duty versions. The mini-circular saw is designed for small household projects such as cutting laminate (figure A). It's battery powered, so you can take it anywhere. The 18-volt circular saw is also cordless (figure B) but has a more powerful motor than the mini-circular saw. It's designed for heavier household projects. The homeowner's saw is a basic model that can handle any household project (figure C). It's more heavy-duty than a mini-circular saw and has a dust port for easy cleaning. Right-handed and left-handed models are available. The framing saw has a worm drive that gives it a higher level of torque (figure D). This saw's small size allows it to fit easily between studs and rafters.
