Rivet guns are used to join materials such as wood, metal or plastic without glue, screws or nails. Rivet guns come in manual and pneumatic models. Attaching Fabric to Wood With a rivet gun and a grommeter, you can attach fabric to wood. Grommets are metal eyelets used to prevent fabric from fraying or ripping (figure A). Rivets are attached through the grommets to secure fabric to wood. Rivets come in various sizes for attaching materials of different thickness (figure B). Materials:
Fabric Awl or other sharply pointed object Grommeter Grommets Drill Drill bits the size of the rivet shank Rivets Manual or pneumatic rivet gun - Use an awl to poke a hole through one corner of the fabric to be fastened to the wood (figure C). The hole must be large enough to accommodate the grommet.
- Use a grommeter to finish the hole with a grommet (figure D).
- Drill a hole into the wood the same size as the shank of the rivet (figure E).
- Using a rivet gun, feed the rivet through the grommet and into the wood. The riveter will pull the metal pin of the rivet through its shank and into the wood (figure F).
- Repeat steps 1 through 4 down the length of the fabric to secure it to the wood.
Attaching Metal to Wood In order to attach metal to wood, you'll need a pneumatic rivet gun, a thicker rivet and a larger drill bit. Materials:
Drill Drill bits the same size as the rivets Rivets Pneumatic rivet gun - Drill a hole through the metal and into the wood (figure G).
- Place the rivet in the nozzle of the rivet gun and insert it in the hole you just drilled (figure H). You may have to pull the trigger several times before the rivet is secure.
- Repeat steps 1 and 2 several times down the length of the metal to attach it to the wood.
