Measuring isn't as easy as getting out a ruler or yardstick. Tony Kramer, host of DIY Tools & Techniques, offers some helpful measuring hints to make the job faster and more accurate. To measure the depth of a hole, put two nuts on a bolt, and insert it into the hole (figure A). The first nut locks the bolt in place, and the second indicates how deep the hole is. To measure the diameter of a circular piece of wood, place two perfect squares on either side of the circle (figure B). The circle's diameter is equal to the distance between the inside edges of the two squares. To determine whether you have a perfect square (equal sides with four 90-degree angles), measure and compare the diagonals (figure C). They must be equal. To measure the diameter of a cylinder, such as a column on a house, clamp two framing squares together. Place the cylinder in the middle of your frame to determine its diameter (figure D).
