Wheelbarrows--shallow, open boxes for moving small loads--have been used for thousands of years. Wheelbarrows are defined by the tripod on which they sit, the point of which is a single wheel. The tires on most wheelbarrows are designed not to go flat even if pierced with a nail (figure A). When loading a wheelbarrow, distribute the material as close to the wheel as possible (figure B). Keeping most of the weight close to the ground helps prevent straining your back. The large-capacity wheelbarrow is often used on farms for transporting fertilizer or manure (figure C).
