If you've used a hammer, you've probably occasionally hit your finger instead of the nail. Here are some safe techniques for driving nails and for hiding them, if you don't want them to be seen. Tips for Driving Nails Place the nail between your index and middle fingers, with your fingernails facing down (figure A). Use a set of needle-nose pliers to grasp the nail while you hammer it (figure B). Place the nail through the teeth of a hair comb (figure C). Place a small lump of clay on the tip of the nail (figure D). Move the clay before you drive the nail all the way. Hiding Nails Use a technique called blind nailing to hide nails and ensure a smooth, flawless surface. Materials:
Small hammer Wood of any kind Nails Wood glue - Use a small hammer to cut a sliver from the surface of the wood (figure E).
- Hammer the nail underneath the sliver (figure F).
- Glue the sliver back down over the head of the nail.
