Every woodworker should have several basic kinds of chisels, which come in a range of sizes. Chisel handles come in two types: socket and tang. On a socket-handled chisel, a portion of the handle fits into the chisel's blade (figure A). On a tang-handled chisel, a portion of the blade fits into the handle (figure B). Both types have beveled edges on one side of the blade and a flat edge on the other. Installing Hinges Before you install hinges, use a chisel to prepare the surface of the work piece. Materials:
Hinge Work piece Chisel Screwdriver Screws - Place the hinge at the desired spot on the work piece. Use the chisel to score an outline of the hinge (figure C).
- Remove the hinge. Dig into the outline with the chisel (figure D). The depth of the cut should correspond with hinge's thickness.
- Use the chisel to carve out the wood inside the outlines of the hinge (figure E). Make the cut as deep as the hinge is thick.
- Use the chisel to scrape away excess wood shavings.
- Screw the hinge into place.
Tip: Use an old tennis ball to store a chisel. Slice the ball with a utility knife, and place the sharp edge of the tool inside the ball (figure F).
