Here, entertaining expert Diann Valentine answers viewers' questions on adding creative touches to outdoor entertaining.
Q: Im having a get together for all the couples in the neighborhood. Its going to be outside, and the tables are really large. I need some ideas for very tall centerpieces. A: I love big, tall centerpieces. They can make a wonderful impression. Use tall vases, and add tall flowers such as tulips.
Q: My wife and I are having a party outside, and we plan to set up a cheese tray. Are there cheeses we should use that melt more slowly? A: Its all about choosing the right kinds of cheese. Id go with cheddar, muenster, parmesan, things like that. And because its outside, you can also get pop up party shelters rather inexpensively. Or, you might want to pick up some mosquito netting. Use it to make a food canopy so you can be sure the bugs dont get to the food before your guests do.
Q: My friends and I are taking turns having TV watching parties at our houses. Im next! I thought I might have it outside just for something different. What do you think? A: I think its a great idea, especially if you have a big screen TV you can move outside. Be sure you have plenty of throws and pillows to sit on. You could make smores and hot chocolate...great outdoor food.
Q: I want to have a romantic picnic with my husband. What kinds of things should I pack to make it extra special? A: A picnic is a great way for couples to stay connected. Take along your standard eating utensils, but also take a soft throw, nice candles and wine. Don't forget the wine glasses!
