Slice a portion from the bottom of a large summer squash to make it sit level. Press a small liqueur glass into the flesh of the squash to make a stencil (figure A).

With a knife, cut through and remove that area, then press the glass into the hole and fill with water halfway. Have fun arranging fresh flowers in the glass (figure B). This is an easy and affordable way to have a fresh, imaginative decoration.

For something more elaborate (figure C), you can remove the glass bowls from metal candleholders and place interesting squash in them to show them off. This works well on a large buffet table. Just place candles around and you have an unusual but interesting display. (To make the squash look really good, spray automobile wax on it and wipe off excess with a towel.)

A final idea: place plastic candleholders in large zucchini. Attach flowers to toothpick with floral tape and place in the flesh of the zucchini to disguise the candleholder. Add a candle to each candleholder (figure D).

A great way to garnish your food is to pull a lemon zester along the flesh of a zucchini to make thin strips, which can then be sprinkled as a garnish. A large squash makes a great tureen to be hollowed out to for serving soup or sauces (figure E) -- or place a candle in the hollowed-out squash.

We at DIY believe all of the recipes from All in Good Taste are accurate and reliable, but since we have not tested them personally, we can claim no responsibility if the desired results are not achieved.
