  • Quick Tip: Using Soil Test Kits
  • From "Ask DIY"
    episode ADI-410
    advertisement

You can test the pH level of your soil yourself to determine the levels of acidity and alkalinity on a scale of zero to 14. Soil-testing kits are readily available at garden centers; they include easy-to-follow directions.

If your soil shows a high acidic level, it needs an addition of lime to help balance it. If it is high in alkalinity, however, you should add sulfur.

Be aware that your plants won't die if their pH level is off, but their development and appearance may be affected.
