    Occasionally you'll need to have a tree removed. Generally, you should try to save a tree whenever possible. But if it becomes more of a liability than a benefit, it should be removed.

    Tree removal is more mechanized today than it was 30 years ago. Then trees were sawed into chunks and lowered piece by piece to the ground with ropes. Today, using large portable cranes, arborists can remove trees more quickly, safely and cheaply. Large sections of trunk are lowered directly into a chipper to facilitate removal. There is still a need for experienced tree climbers (figure A), but the injury rate is much lower thanks to the improved equipment.
