A living Christmas tree can be any variety, but remember that it was meant to be outside, not inside, so you can't keep them in the house too long. The best strategy for keeping a Christmas tree alive past the holidays is to start early, even before Christmas. Follow these instructions:

    1. Dig a hole and fill it with straw in the fall.
    2. Buy the tree early and keep it in a cool, unheated area such as a garage or carport.
    3. A few days before Christmas, but no more than a week, move the tree inside.
    4. Place the tree in a spot where it is well away from drafts or heater vents.
    5. Keep the root-ball nice and moist at all times - not soggy, but don't let it dry out either.
    6. No more than three days after Christmas, move the tree outside. First, keep it in an unheated garage so it gets used to the outdoor temperatures. Then, plant it at a permanent site.
