Below is some basic information on how we approached our Garden Sense spring landscaping makeover.

    Basics

    • Build the "bones" early with trees and shrubs: they will anchor your landscape, and they're the plants around which everything else will be planted.

    • Plant seasonal color that lasts all year: this will ensure that you extend your landscape color all year long. You'll want to have something colorful in your landscape--whether it's foliage or flowers--from January through December.

    • Create natural transitions from small to large. Study how big your plants are going to be, then put them in groupings from small to large to create the maximum impact in your landscape.

    Project Details

    • First we ripped out all the plants that were dull and dying. Sometimes sensible gardening means starting with a clean slate.

    • We divided the project into sections since the house is so wide:

      • On the right side we removed the turf and extended the beds all the way to the sidewalk. We planted trees and shrubs as the bones of the plan, including a Spring Grove arborvitae and a Cornelian cherry.

      • In a prominent spot in the center, we added Tardiva hydrangea; its white flowers will extend color later in the season. Then we filled the bed with dozens of flowers and grasses.
