For 16 years Pam and Bob Hampel have collected bonsai trees, and their garden now features several hundred plants, some of which are show quality. Their involvement in the hobby began at a state fair, where they fell in love with a bonsai tree. They each worked on a tree in a bonsai workshop at the fair and have been hooked ever since. Pat loves bonsai azaleas in full bloom; Bob's favorite is ponderosa pine. The Hampels keep a specific area of the garden for growing bonsai, and it takes years for a tree to develop into a show-quality plant. Young trees are held in the growing area until they are ready to be displayed in the garden.
