  • Creating a Flow Line
  • From "Weekend Landscaping"
    episode WKL-110
    advertisement

    1. To begin this project, first identify any boulders in your yard you wish to use, or purchase them from a rock and gravel vendor.

    2. Create a "flow line" for the swale with a shovel. Drag the tip of the shovel along the path where you want the flow line located. The center of the swale's flow line should be three to four feet from any grasses that exist or that you may wish to plant. For a more natural look, give the flowline a gently curve.

    3. Grade the area so that the flow line is lower than the surrounding area. If drainage water is flowing from asphalt, the flow line should have a downward grade of two to three percent.

    4. After grading, tamp down the earth within and around the flow line.
