Pre-positioning plants before taking them out of their containers will allow you to evaluate placement and make changes until you achieve the perfect look.

Using rocks or stones to accent a landscape or garden can provide an easy and effective way to create a dramatic focal point or simply add dimension to a planted area. It's important, however, to make sure the arrangement of the rocks looks natural once they're in place. Here DIY Gardening and Landscaping host Kim Haworth shares some easy tips for beautifully integrating rocks and stones with surrounding foliage or grass.

    • When selecting rocks to accent a particular area, always choose shapes and sizes that are proportionate to the surrounding plants and that suit the general size of the overall area. Look for colors, shapes and textures that suit your own personal taste.

    • Purchase several container plants of different varieties to "dress up" the rocks. (Fescue grass and vinca are two varieties featured here.)

    • After arranging the rocks to your liking, position the container plants around them, placing some along the outside and some in the spaces between. Once you've determined where each plant works best, go ahead and plant it in the soil. Alternative: If the arrangement of the rocks will hide the containers, you may want to leave the plants container-bound to allow for easy rearrangement or replacement later.

    • Allow trailing stems to lie across the rocks; this will help to create a natural look.

    • Choose plants of various colors and experiment with monochromatic and multicolor groupings.

    • Remember that rocks not only make great visual accents for gardens and yards but also look great on patios and terraces.

    • Whether the plants are in the ground or in containers, water them thoroughly once they're in their final places.
