Time: 16 hours over 2-1/2 days. Difficulty Rating: This project rates a 2 on the Weekend Handyman scale.
Materials: Greenhouse kit Class-5 aggregate Sand Timbers Pavers Phillips-head screwdriver 10mm wrench 10mm nut driver Metric tape measure Hammer Skill saw Drill and bits Steel rake Shovel Tamper Ladder Long level Paver splitter Day Two Expert Tip: Panels help keep the greenhouse square. The best way is to measure each side to make sure all your sides are equal. Measure corner to opposite corner on both sides and the two measurements should be equal. - Make sure the greenhouse frame is sitting evenly on the base before you screw it down. Pre-drill and then drive a deck screw (coated 3/8") through the bottom sill of the greenhouse and into the timber (figure A).
- With the greenhouse in place, you can continue installing the polycarbonate panels.
- On the gable end, the gaskets are not pre-cut. Slip the panel into place and then measure your gasket and use snips to cut it to the proper length.
- Press the gasket all the way down and into place (figure B). Do this on both sides of the end panels and then measure your top gasket and snip it to the right length and press it into place.
- Bow and flex the side-wall panels into place (figure C). After the side walls are in, press side gaskets into place.
- With the side panels and gaskets in, it's time to put one roof panel into place and then slide the strut down on top of it. The windows should just slide into place. There's a hinge attached to the ridge pole (figure D) -- you can just slide the window frame to where it is going to be.
- Attach the hinges to your door frame and then slide the door into place. If it doesn't close easily, use a rubber mallet to gently hammer it into place.
- Remember that the top of the wall is the gutter system, and in order to have the water drain away from the greenhouse, you'll need to install a downspout (figure E). Attach the small holder and then put the downspout into that -- drill a hole and screw it into place.
Adding the Accessories - To install the exhaust fan, use a utility knife to cut a hole in the polycarbonate panel on the back wall of your greenhouse.
- Mark your holes and install the louver (figure F) on the outside of the greenhouse, and put in your carriage bolts.
- Mount the fan with the motor on the inside. Bolt it on using the carriage bolts.
Expert Tip: An exhaust fan is a good idea because it is a cooling system. It will draw out hot air and bring in fresh cool air. - The automatic window opener (figure G) clamps onto the greenhouse and the window. The cylinder is filled with oil and when the oil heats up it pushes the arm and the window opens; when it cools back down, the arm contracts and closes the window. Attach it to the frame using two bolts.
Note: You can turn the opener off in cold weather to override the opening mechanism. - Other accessories include a potting bench and plant hangers, including a plant spiral. It hangs from the ceiling and provides a great climbing wall for plants and vines. It twists right into a channel on our greenhouse frame.
- The watering system (figure H) uses gravity to feed water to hoses going to each plant. It mounts onto the back wall of your greenhouse and then the hoses connect to the plants you want to water.
