Why pay lots of money for a tabletop garden fountain when you can build one yourself?

    Materials:

    Large terra-cotta pot
    Silicone caulk
    Waterproofing sealant
    Aluminum flashing
    Small water pump
    Drill, with masonry bit

    1. Seal a large bowl-shaped terra-cotta pot (figure A) by caulking a small piece of aluminum flashing over the hole in the bottom (figure B) and applying a waterproof sealant over the interior of the bowl.

    2. Use a masonry bit to cut a hole in the side of the pot. The hole should be large enough for the plug of the water pump to fit through (figure C). You may need to make three holes and break them out. Another option is to cut the plug off the end of the cord and thread the cord through a smaller hole before reattaching the plug. Be careful when drilling the holes: terra cotta breaks easily.

    3. After threading the plug through the hole in the pot, set the fountain in position (figure D).

    4. Attach aluminum flashing around the hole for the plug (figure E), and caulk all openings.

    5. Place rocks and crushed granite in the bottom of the bowl (figure F), then place decorative rocks on top of the granite (figure G).

    6. Add water to the system, and turn on the pump. Add moss and foliage as desired.
