Why plant a green lawn when you can plant a blue, silver or even red one? Native grasses come in a variety of colors, textures and sizes. John Greenlee, the author of the Encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses, explains some of the benefits of creating an environmentally friendly lawn (figure A) using native sedges and grasses: they don't need to be watered, fertilized and mowed, so they're easier on the environment and ultimately better for the planet. And grasses grow in every environment in the world, so there are varieties available that are suited to any climatic conditions.
