Stones and pottery shards are used to enhance an antique metal banister.

A visit to artist and designer Heidi Wianecki's garden proves that garden decor needn't be expensive. Heidi loves to use materials in unexpected ways, and she integrates the inside of her home with the garden outside.

Her garden holds some interesting surprises, such as a lawnmower built in 1918, broken pottery shards placed around the base of a tree (figure A) and the wrought-iron banister of an old staircase.

Heidi believes that personalizing everything in the garden makes her kids feel more involved and provides them with a sense of having an impact on their environment.
