    The "Real Dirt" on Dirt

Adding sand to clay soil is a common practice, but it's not always helpful. Though your intent may be to separate and loosen hard-packed soil, you may end up essentially making "concrete" instead. Watch the video for a quick tip on the best methods for creating the perfect mix for healthy garden soil.

    Dirt On Gardening Viewer Tip

Cathy of Eden Valley, California built a secluded "secret garden" in her back yard that doubles as a dog run. An iron fence provides a safe and secure refuge for her dogs, and inside the fenced area she selected plants and materials that are dog-compatible and blend visually with the surroundings. She used rocky mountain granite, moss-covered boulders and the types of trees and plants that might be found along a dry creek bed--manzanita, butterfly iris and forest pansy. Both Cathy and her canine friends get enjoyment from this carefully planned garden space.
