Before the Great Smoky Mountains range was established as a national park in 1934, much of the land, including the Tremont area, was owned by lumber companies. For years companies like the Little River Lumber Company cut and removed huge portions of one of the nation's greatest expanses of virgin forest. Timber removal from the area ended in 1938.
