Appliances that offer a great source of comfort to the inside of a home can be very disagreeable to the eye when viewed outside of the home. So it is with the humble window unit air conditioner: although it's quite serviceable, it's certainly not so attractive. But with structural materials like lattice screens, an eyesore can become eye candy.
