Project by Iza Taylor from Vista, Calif.

Iza loves working with glass. She creates incredible pieces in her home studio; among her interesting projects is this glass "bird's nest" that makes for a fantastic garden ornament.

    Materials:

6 colors of COE 90 glass
3 colors of COE 90 frits
    slumping mold
    glass cutter
    cutter oil
    paper
    pencil
    cutting board
    ruler

    Steps:

    1. Cut glass circles out of sheet glass for red circle and clear top.

    2. Move cut glass to next work table and paint with light techniques to add depth and designs to piece. This is done with powdered glass.

    3. Use torch work to bend and shape glass stringers to add to top surface of circles.

    4. Cut bird's nest strips of glass from variety of colors about 1/2" x 4".

    5. Place all glass pieces in kiln for first firing. Put piece in kiln for slumping process where piece is placed on mold.

    6. Allow to cool after firing. Open kiln to find complete three-dimensional bird bath.

Place the birdbath on a stand in the yard or set it on a table to serve food in.
