Project by Chris Thayer of New Orleans, La.

Chris is a jack-of-all trades who, along with his wife, owns and operates a unique retail store. But when this woodworker isn’t minding the store, he’s using reclaimed items to make funky and playful carvings, like his outdoor garden angel.

    Materials:

2 planks of old cedar fencing--older the better!
8" - 10" long, about 1-1/2" thick piece of wood
    scroll saw with extra blades
    disk and belt tabletop sander
    wood burner
    wire snips
    wire (black)
    nail gun
    wood glue
    acrylic paint
    paint brushes
    1/4" wooden dowels
    drill
drill bits: size of the dowel, size of the wire
clear acrylic spray paint (for outside use)

    Steps:

    1. Draw design of angel on wood.

    2. Use scroll saw to cut out body, head, arms, wings, leaves and flowers.

    3. Sand and shape all pieces.

    4. Draw details on cut out pieces.

    5. Burn all details on shaped pieces with woodburner.

    6. Paint all pieces as desired.

    7. Drill holes in head and for wire wrapping.

    8. Assemble all pieces

    9. Glue dowels into head and affix head to body.

    10. Nail and glue wings, arms, leaves and flowers to angel body.

    11. Spray angel with clear acrylic paint to seal if she'll be outside.
