Project by Joy Teiken of Minneapolis, Minn.

Joy is a whiz at mixing funky fabrics with her original designs. Her silk and taffeta matching handbag and hat is just one of her many creations and one she is eager to share in this project.

    For the hat:

    Materials:

    Dupioni or Thai silk
    flocked taffeta
    1-inch silk ribbon
    beads
    needle
    thread
    scissors
    measuring tape
    pins

    Steps:

    1. Cut the silk to 28" x 10" for the sides of the hat, an 8" x 9" circle for the top of the hat, and 36" x 6" for the brim of the hat.
    2. Cut the taffeta to 24" x 4" for the side of the liner and 6" x 7" for the top of the liner.
    3. Cut the ribbon to 25 inches long.
    4. Pin and sew the right sides of all the rectangle pieces using a 5/8-inch seam allowance.
    5. Pin the circles to the sides and sew them together. Do this for both the outside of the hat and the liner.
    6. Place the liner inside the hat and pin the two pieces together, making four pleats equal distances around the hat. Sew the liner and hat together.
    7. The silk part is much taller than the taffeta, so pin the silk to the liner to create the folds throughout the hat. Hand stitch where the pins are.
    8. Fold the brim in two and pin the liner onto the hat, making equal pleats around the hat. Sew the brim onto the hat.
    9. Pin and sew the ribbon on the inside of the hat.
    10. Fold the brim up close to the hat and sew seam around the whole hat.
    11. Sew the beads onto the flowers and attach the flowers on one side of the hat.

    For the handbag:

    Materials:

    Dupioni or Thai silk
    flocked taffeta
    wire
    magnetic snap
    beads
    scissors
    needle
    thread
    measuring tape

    Steps:

    1. Cut the silk to 10" x 24". Cut the taffeta to 6" x 24."
    2. Pin the right sides of the fabric together, create three pleats at the bottom of the silk, and sew a 5/8-inch seam allowance around three sides of the fabric.
    3. Sew the corners of both the silk bag and the taffeta liner and turn them right side out.
    4. Fold down the tops of both pieces and create a crease.
    5. Attach the magnetic snap about 1 inch from the top of the liner.
    6. Place the liner inside the silk and make three pleats on each side. Sew the two together.
    7. Bead the wire and sew the handle to each of the sides.
    8. Bead the flower and attach the flower to the side of the bag.
