Project by Stefen Reed from New York, N.Y. As a young boy growing up in New York, Stefen spent all of his free time at an after-school arts program. So taken with all he learned, he now spends much of his free time perfecting his artistic skills as well as teaching them to the next generation of after-school students. One of those skills is creating photo emulsion transfers on tile using his own paintings and photos.
Materials:
painting (or image of choice) photograph color photocopies of images cardboard glue spray paint photo transfer paper water tile wide wet soft brush paper towel lacquer
Steps:
1. Make color photocopy of artwork and of photograph.
2. Cut and paste copies onto cardboard with glue in collage manner. Add spray paint for embellishment.
3. Laser print collage onto photo transfer paper. Cut laser print design to fit tile or surface.
4. Pour hot water into tray (3 inches deep). Soak design in hot water (paper will curl; leave until paper uncurls).
5. Lay design onto tile or surface. Slowly slide top layer away from white blocking paper, holding design lightly in place with fingertips.
6. Remove air bubbles from tile and design by using wide, wet, soft brush to brush over design.
7. Dab on design surface with napkin/paper towel to remove excess water. Let air dry about 10 minutes. You can use a hairdryer to speed the process.
8. Put in oven and heat or use lacquer to seal. Preheat to 300 F degrees and place art on metal rack for 1 minute. This best sets design to tile.
