Project by Olivia Gallander of New Orleans, La. Olivia loves jewelry. In this project, she makes a stunning sterling necklace that is strung with sterling wire and rose quartz. Materials: sterling silver sheet metal sterling silver wire faceted rose quartz in various shapes freshwater pearls liver of sulfur stamping tools scribe sandpaper steel wool mask and gloves safety goggles Steps: 1. String pearls and apply the clasp. 2. Draw a rectangle shape to be sawed out on a sheet of sterling with a permanent marker. Measure and draw another rectangle inside of the larger rectangle. The idea is to make a picture frame. 3. Drill a hole, put the blade through the hole, and saw out the smaller rectangle. File the outside corners of the rectangle to create a smoother, rounded effect. Do the same to the inside. 4. Starting with the most harsh sandpaper first and working down to the less harsh (smaller grit), sand the piece to create a smooth, matte finish. 5. Using Art Mark tools and hammer, make little designs in the metal. 6. Using a scribe and hammer, make small marks where you will drill holes down each side of the frame and one at the top of the rectangle where it will hang from the pearls. 7. Wearing protective eye goggles, drill the holes. 8. Put on a mask and gloves for safety. Place the silver pendant and wire in the liver of sulfur, which will oxidize the metal, turning it black. Remove the sterling silver and place under running water with soap. 9. Using steel wool, scrub the liver of sulfur off of the piece, leaving the black in the art marks. This makes the designs more visible and gives the piece an antique, worn effect. Also, it creates a nice contrast between the feminine, light-colored stone and the harsh metal. 10. Use the sterling wire to wrap the rose quartz and pearls, lacing the designs from one side of the frame to the other, creating a gorgeous focal point. 11. Use the sterling wire to hang the pendant from the pearl necklace. Website: www.ogjewelry.com
