Project by Jeanne McGee from Minneapolis, Minn.

In this segment, Jeanne applies her printing talents to a distinctive hand-printed lampshade.

    Materials:

    1 piece of 1/2" plywood
    jigsaw
    ink
    ink roller
    Japanese rice paper
    press bed
    craft knife
    glue
    metal lampshade frame
    lamp base

    Steps:

    1. Carve decorative pattern into 1/2-inch birch plywood.

    2. Roll ink on to the carved wood.

    3. Lay Japanese paper on to the inked piece of wood.

    4. Put carved wood/paper on to press bed and run through press.

    5. Remove paper from wood. The pattern is now transferred on to the paper.

    6. Allow paper to dry (one day).

    7. Using a craft knife, cut the printed paper into pieces to match the size of the lampshade. Cut four pieces, one for each side.

    8. Glue cut paper pieces to frame. Place finished lampshade over lamp.
