Project by Brad Henry of St. Paul, Minn.Brad is a hip and talented potter whose travels throughout the world have strongly influenced his work, as seen in much of his Asian-influenced designs. In this project, this former computer science major creates an elegant and contemporary stoneware platter that conveys the passion Brad exudes for his craft.
Materials:
2' x 3' piece of plywood, at least 1/4" thick.
plain cotton T-shirt
2' piece of string
2 nails
sledge hammer
1' x 2' piece of spandex
staple gun and staples
four 4-1/2" bricks
25 lbs. of plaster
20 lbs. of water
5 gallon bucket
stick to mix the plaster
15 lbs. of clay
wood knife
slab roller
glazes
wax
#8 Sumi brush
kiln
mop
mop bucket
coffee
some good music
Steps:1. Draw (figure A) and then cut oval out of plywood board.
2. Staple T-shirt over oval hole and put board up on bricks.
3. Mix and pour plaster into T-shirt (figure B). Gravity will weigh it down, creating a bowl-shaped mold. Let dry.
4. Remove mold and clean up edge (figure C).
5. Roll clay slab. Put slab on mold (figure D) and remove excess clay.
6. Let dry overnight. Then bisque fire.
7. Apply base glaze (figure E) and wax (figure F). Let wax dry overnight.
8. Apply overglaze and wipe off excess.
9. High fire one day and let cool for two days.
