    Lynne was really into her ceramics class until she had kids--then there was never enough time and it was too messy. Then Lynne discovered polymer clay is the ideal medium for her. In this project, Lynne makes a fun "jump for joy" pin.

    Materials:

    all colors except black scrap polymer clay
    slice of polymer clay jelly roll for head
    'cookie' cutter for body shape (or sharp thin knife)
    1/2" piece of telephone wire
    1" pin back
    multipurpose adhesive
    pasta machine
    acrylic roller
    thin slicing tool
    cardboard
    clay-dedicated oven

    Steps:


    1. Gather your scraps into a ball. Compress the ball with your hands so that there will be as little air as possible inside the clay.


    2. Shape this clay into a wide, flat rectangular-shaped cane. Slice off 1/4-inch pieces (figure A).


    3. Lay these pieces together and smooth the seams to create a flat sheet of clay. Roll this piece through the #1 setting on the pasta machine. Fold in half lengthwise to create a flat piece of clay that is double thick.


    4. Cut the body shape out of this piece (figure B) and smooth the edges (figure C).


    5. Make a jelly roll out of clay with colors that will compliment the colors of the body. Slice off a piece for the head. Attach the head to the body and smooth the back.


    6. Add some plastic coated wire to the back to give it extra strength (figure D). Bake the piece according to manufacturer's instructions and glue on a pin back.
