Project by Laura Gibson of Round Rock, Texas.

Laura wants more than to make her jewelry pretty -- she wants it to have meaning. In this segment, Laura pays tribute to her beloved four-legged friends with an etched copper dog tag necklace.

    Materials:

    jeweler’s saw
    saw blades
    file
    copper tongs
    scribe
    sand paper
    steel wool
    torch
    crock pot
    22-gauge sheet copper or thicker
    copper tubing
    asphaltum
    wax paper
    paper towels
    paint brush
    paint thinner
    nitric acid
    glass container
    large feather
    solder
    flux
    mild acid for cleaning
    silver chain

    Steps:

    1. Cut out a piece of copper.

    2. Coat the copper with a tar-like substance called asphaltum.

    3. When it’s dry, write on the surface with a fine point scribe, which removes the asphaltum in only those areas.

    4. Drop the piece in nitric acid. This etches away the written areas.

    5. Clean the piece and use the torch to give it a patina.
