Project by Laura Gibson of Round Rock, Texas.

Laura wants more than to make her jewelry pretty--she wants it to have meaning. Her metal, resin and herb necklaces have meaning that represent life affirmations, whether the clove for love and protection, the juniper for health and beauty, or the poppy seed for fertility.

    Materials:

    jeweler’s saw
    saw blades
    torch, tweezers
    syringe
    crock pot
    various sterling silver bezel cups
    silver tubing
    solder
    flux
    mild acid for cleaning
    silver chain
    steel wool
    resin, pastels
    tooth picks
    herbs
    small plastic cups

    Steps:

    1. First cut a small segment of silver tubing that the chain will be strung through. Then solder that tube to the bezel (the silver cup that holds the resin).

    2. Place this in the "pickle" (crock pot of mild acid) for cleaning.

    3. Then solder the interior bezels to the larger bezel. These smaller bezel cups hold the different colors. Then that goes into the pickle.

    4. Once the pickle has cleaned all of the metal, give it a more thorough cleaning with sandpaper and steel wool.

    5. Then it is ready to fill with the resin. Choose the colors and use a toothpick to bring the color into a powder.

    6. Then mix the two-part resin using a syringe to measure exactly. Once the clear resin is mixed, use the syringe to add the resin to the colored powders and mix those together.

    7. Use a toothpick to carefully drip the colors into the bezels until they are about half full.

    8. Use tweezers to carefully place the herbs into each color.

    9. This all has to dry for 24 hours. Then a topcoat of clear resin is added to protect the herbs.
