    Maria makes jewelry using her own glass beads made from recycled bottles.

    Materials:

    glass bottles
    base metal beads
    metal wire
    black suede cord with magnet clasp
    lampworking tools and torch
    glass cutters
    bead release
    mandrel

    Steps:


    1. Wash and remove labels from tall recycled bottle. With a glass cutter, cut off the bottom of the bottle. Score and cut bottle lengthwise (figure A) into strips that are approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide.


    2. Heat strip over bench burner torch. When the glass is hot and molten, wrap it around the mandrel (metal rod that has been dipped in bead release) to form bead (figure B).


    3. After bead is complete, put into warm crock pot of vermiculite to anneal (cooling process to prevent cracking) (figure C).


    4. After completely cooled (depends on the size of the bead), hold mandrel with pliers and twist bead off (figure D).


    5. Clean the inside out with a little file and wash the bead.
