Project by Cara Markowitz from New York, N.Y.For Cara, recycling glass is not only an eco-friendly gesture but the perfect way to create hip pieces of jewelry. Her "Amber Garden" necklace made with resin and bottle glass is a perfect example.
Materials:
pre-made silicone rubber mold
paper or plastic cup
casting resin
resin color and hardener
bottle glass
4 grades of sandpaper, rough to very fine
water
rubber gloves
protective goggles
firm-sewn buffing wheel
loose-sewn buffing wheel
plastic buffing compound
drill
glue
Steps:1. In a paper or plastic cup, mix casting resin with color and hardener. Pour thin layer of resin mixture into mold on a flat surface (figure A). Allow resin to set.
2. Place glass (embedment) into mold and pour a layer of resin over glass (embedment) (figure B). Allow to fully cure for 12 to 24 hours.
3. Release piece from mold. Dry-sand off surface layer and shape piece (figure C).
4. Wet-sand piece surface in water using four different grades of sandpaper (from rough to very fine) while wearing rubber gloves (figure D).
5. Buff all surfaces with a firm-sewn buffing wheel and a plastic buffing compound while wearing protective goggles.
6. Polish all piece surfaces to full shine with a loose-sewn buffing wheel. Remember to wear goggles for this step too.
7. Drill holes into pieces (figure E).
8. Assemble and glue the jewelry piece as desired.
