Project by Sarah Hall from Portland, Ore.

Sarah started making candlesticks a few years ago when she was coming up with projects to sell at a holiday flea market. In this project, she makes an impressive clay figurine candlestick with a lot of personality and style.

    Materials:

    earthenware clay
    clay tools
    ceramic glazes

    Steps:

    1. Extrude hollow tubes from earthenware clay, or coil build long hollow tube (figure A).

    2. Cut tubes to 12 to 15 inches long and stand on end. Add base to standing tube (figure B).

    3. Make torso, arms and hands and add to top of tube (figure C).

    4. Model head and neck and attach (figure D).

    5. Make crown for holding candle and attach to top of head (figure E).

    6. Add details by carving, shaping, and modeling clay (see again figure C).

    7. Allow clay to dry for 3 to 10 days.

    8. Load kiln with candleholders and bisque fire greenware to cone 04.

    9. Unload kiln the next day and brush on glaze and stains (up to three coats of each type).

    10. Load kiln and fire to cone 06. Unload the kiln the next day.

    11. Add any touch-ups, gold leaf, etc.

    12. Put felt circles on bottom to keep the candlestick from scraping furniture and tabletops.
