    Carman is handy with handbags. Using the sewing skills she learned from her grandmother and mother growing up, Carman has created a style all her own. In this project, she creates a funky, farm-animal purse.

    Materials:

    fabric and materials for purse and handles *
    standard dinner plate
    saucer
    soup can
    sewing machine
    needle
    thread
    scissors
    grommets
    hole punch
    pen
    pins

    * clear plastic or shower curtain, plastic toys, fake flowers, vinyl, corduroy, upholstery and other miscellaneous fabrics

    Steps:

    1. Pick out fabric and materials for purse and handles. Clear plastic or shower curtain, plastic toys, fake flowers, vinyl, corduroy, upholstery and other miscellaneous fabrics will work. Trace a large circle onto the fabric using a standard dinner plate (figure A). Four large circles are needed in all. One large clear plastic or shower curtain circle is needed for the front of the purse, and one large circle is needed for the back of the purse. Two large circles are needed for the inside of the purse.

    2. Trace a small circle onto the fabric for the handle using a saucer. Four small circles are needed in all: two small vinyl or leather circles for the outside part of the handle and two small circles for the inside of the handle.

    3. Cut out the four large (figure B) and small circles for the inside and outside of the purse.

    4. Trace a smaller circle inside the four small circles using a soup can (figure C), and cut the smaller circle out of the handle for your hand to go through (figure D).

    5. Put the wrong sides of the large clear plastic circle to the large inside piece. Place the plastic toys inside before sewing. Sew with the two wrong sides pinned together (figure E). Do this for the front and the back of the purse.

    6. Put the wrong sides of the handles together with the vinyl facing out. Do this for the front and back of the purse. Pin the tops of the handles together so they don’t move, for the front and back of the purse (figure F).

    7. Punch three holes into the vinyl and inside piece of the handle for grommets--front only.

    8. Put the sewn large circle between the vinyl and inside piece of the handle, on the front and back of the purse.

    9. Draw through the punched holes on the large circle to line up the grommet holes on the front only.

    10. Trace where the inside hole on the handle matches up on the body of the purse. Do this on the front and back of the purse.

    11. Cut the piece of fabric out on the large circle where the hole for the handle will be. Do this for the front and back of the purse.

    12. Punch the holes on the large circle where the grommet holes where traced (front only).

    13. Place the front of the purse (clear plastic piece) in the middle of the handle with grommet holes. Match up the marks to the holes and put grommets in; attaching the two pieces.

    14. With the back of the purse, place the large circle between the other set of handles and pin together. Sew the handles to the large circles by going around the handle several times. Do this for the front and back of the purse.

    15. Decide how large the opening of the purse will be and mark on both sides (figure G). Sew the front and back of the purse, insides together, leaving the opening.
